The Friesian-horse world can be confusing. "Registered" it usually reads but registered where, what
Friesian registries are there, and what is their substance or lack
thereof? Up until the early 1990s there was no
confusion with only one worldwide Friesian registry (KFPS). The rise
in the Friesian's popularity over the past 10 years brought
forth several different registries but there is still only one
original, worldwide authority: the Dutch registry KFPS, est. 1879. The registries listed
have to some degree or other things in common with/copied from KFPS
but the FHANA is the one and only recognized representative of the
KFPS in North America through which all services are accessed and
through which papers can be properly updated and registered. Please
determine for yourself what is right for you. My sole allegiance is
to the KFPS/FHANA for they will improve and preserve the breed with
over 125 years of experience and stats.
KFPS/FHANA
The Dutch registry
Koninklijk Friesch
Paarden-Stamboek KFPS (est. 1879) with its North American
representative
Friesian Horse Association of North America
FHANA
(est. 1984) is the original and oldest
studbook built on solid research, experience, tradition, history, a vision for
the future, widely available and extremely useful statistics, and the best quality horses. FHANA itself is not a studbook but is the
one and only affiliate in North America through which all KFPS
services are accessed and processed. KFPS is a global studbook
with representations worldwide and an inclusive, international
vision. Currently it is going through structural revisions to
better include the foreign members, better respond to members' needs
overall, and to better manage the growing "foreign" Friesian-horse
population. Any other Friesian registry
out there cannot claim the depth, size or expertise and in fact consist
mostly of horses and people originating from the KFPS/FHANA. The KFPS/FHANA
will ascertain quality and user-friendly Friesians worldwide for
now and the future. Some of the benefits of the KFPS / FHANA
are: excellent and in-depth publications, an unparalleled
history and experience, statistics and research to aid the
serious breeder and user, the best-value papers, just to name a few.
We are a group of enthusiastic members determined to bring the
Friesian into the future. Back to index.

Cross Registries
There are various American crossbreeding registries
such as the Friesian Blood Horse Registry (FBHR), the Friesian Sport Horse Registry (FSHR),
the Moriesian Horse Registry (MHR),
the International Warlander Society & Registry (IWSR),
the Arabo-Friesian Sport Horse Association North America (AFSHANA), the Friewalker Registry (FWR), the International Friesian Cross Association (IFCA),
and whatever will be thought of next.

Federated
Friesians
Federated Friesians (FF) is an initiative by
FOA from January 2006 to share data and resources among Friesian
registries like a GMO (general membership organization) inspired by
the USDF structure. Our thoughts. While the idea sounds great it's an
interesting way to obtain data from and access to the judgings of
purebred Dutch Friesians as the new organizations in all actuality
are now guiding their horses into murky waters with no structured
path to the future. Starting out with purebred Friesians is an easy
way to set up one's own group but then you separate yourself from
the original studbook with over 1 1/4 century of proven experience
and resources. There is no reason in my mind for the KFPS/FHANA Friesian to
join FF.
Keep in mind that FHANA is the one and only affiliate in North
America through which all KFPS
services are accessed and processed.

General
Registry Comment
Of course there will be pretty specimen no
matter what registry but ask for the papers and they
will most likely originally be KFPS / FHANA horses. Some
unapproved stallions might make for a nice combination with a
certain
mare but the offspring will not have the valuable, fully
recognized papers and a random good combination does not qualify a
stallion for breeding. Or perhaps you have seen a random
nice crossbred at best but has there ever been one that was a
Friesian. Of course no system is perfect and therefore the Dutch
studbook does adjust when necessary based on solid information
instead of impulse and personal desires. We set the bar high as that
is what has given us and will preserve the prized Friesian the way
it is today. Links to each organization's website have been provided
here to help you read up. To me it makes absolutely no sense to break
up a breed, especially when it means lowering standards and
dedication to purebreds means there is no place for part breds. Again, FHANA is the one
and only affiliate in North America through which all KFPS
services are accessed and processed.
